Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb 80/20 ground beef
  • 2 large sweet yellow onions
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter (divided)
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: Slice onions thinly and cook in 1 tbsp butter over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until golden brown (20-25 minutes).
  2. Prepare the patties: In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper; form into four patties.
  3. Cook the patties: In another skillet, heat 1 tbsp butter over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side until desired doneness; add cheese during the last minute to melt.
  4. Toast the bread: Butter one side of each slice of bread and toast in a separate skillet until golden brown (2-3 minutes per side).
  5. Assemble: Place one patty on unbuttered side of bread, top with caramelized onions, and cover with another slice of bread (buttered side out).
  6. Grill the sandwich: Return to skillet and grill until both sides are crispy and golden brown (3-4 minutes per side). Slice and serve hot.
