- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F – 115°F)
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2/3 cup baking soda (for boiling)
- Coarse sea salt (for topping)
- 2 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
- Activate the yeast: Combine warm water and sugar in a bowl. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit until foamy (about 5 minutes).
- Make the dough: In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and stir until combined into a rough dough.
- Knead the dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
- Shape pretzels: Divide dough into about 8 pieces, roll each into ropes, then twist into pretzel shapes.
- Boil pretzels: Bring water to a boil in a large pot, add baking soda, and boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds per side before transferring to parchment-lined baking sheets.
- Bake pretzels: Preheat oven to 450°F. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse salt.
