  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup dried currants or raisins
  • Flour paste for crosses: 1/4 cup flour + water

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk until just warm to the touch. Sprinkle in yeast and a pinch of sugar; let sit until frothy (5-10 minutes).
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture.
  3. Add butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and currants/raisins; stir until cohesive.
  4. Knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place dough in an oiled bowl; cover and let rise in a warm spot until doubled (1-2 hours).
  6. Punch down dough, divide into 12 portions, shape into buns, and place on a lined baking tray.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Create flour paste for crosses and pipe onto buns.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown; cool slightly before serving.
