Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until fluffy (about 3 minutes).
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. In another bowl, whisk flour and baking powder together. Gradually mix into wet ingredients until combined; avoid over-mixing.
  5. Wrap dough in plastic and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Roll out chilled dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thick; cut shapes using cookie cutters.
  7. Place cookies on prepared baking sheets and bake for 8–10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
  8. Cool completely before decorating with royal icing mixed with food coloring.
